Phase 1 Demolition to Start Monday in Downtown Wausau at Sears Building

May 14, 2021

It’s official: demolition of the Wausau Center Mall starts Monday, May 17.

The transformation of eight city blocks in the heart of downtown Wausau will begin on Monday as construction fences go up around the perimeter of the vacant Wausau Center Mall that opened in 1983. By Wednesday, demolition crews will start work in the area of the former Sears building near Washington Street and 5th Street and move west throughout the summer, stopping at the JC Penney building. HOM Furniture and two parking ramps will remain and be open during all phases of the redevelopment process.

On Tuesday, water utility crews will begin disconnecting water and sewer mains from the mall along Washington Street. This is not anticipated to disrupt any of the surrounding businesses. However, Washington Street will be closed temporarily to accommodate the transporting of heavy equipment and materials. “We’ll be doing our best to minimize the amount of time the street is shut down,” said Eric Lindman, director of Public Works and Utilities for the City of Wausau.

To minimize disruptions to downtown Wausau, the city has elected to work in the evening from 7:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. “City crews will be completing other work during the day in preparation for the excavation work,” Lindman said. “The preparation work during the day will not require any street closures.”

The City of Wausau will issue traffic bulletins to inform the public of important construction notices. Demolition work will take place during the week on:

  • Tuesday, May 18, 7:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.
  • Wednesday, May 19, 7:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.
  • Thursday, May 20, 7:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.
