Finding Your People in Your New Place

Adjusting to a new place can be stressful. You may have to step outside of your comfort zone and ask a few questions. But you’ll quickly discover that the Greater Wausau Region is unique in so many ways.

For one, we’re proud of our mountain, and yes it really is just that. Rib Mountain is 670 feet tall and in relation to the lower surrounding terrain, it qualifies. When it comes to food, we treat our cheese curds like a delicacy. Our Italian Fries are not found in Italy. On game days, we wear green and gold to church.

Our residents are friendly and welcoming. We carpool, invite co-workers over for Bunco and teach newcomers the art of curling. There are plenty of fun, meaningful things to do and you’ll find your fit in no time at all.

Emerging Leaders

United Way Emerging Leaders is the next generation of professionals, uniting to help our community thrive. Learn more at United Way of Marathon County Emerging Leaders.

Sign Up for a Class

Attending classes is a good way to meet others with common interests. The Marathon County Public Library system offers a variety of learning activities, from making homemade soaps and watercolor art to book clubs. Some school districts hold community education programs that include cooking, computer and fitness classes, while our colleges offer ample continuing education courses.

Volunteer for a Cause

Being community-focused comes naturally in our region where the philanthropic spirit is strong. From Noon Optimists and the United Way to faith organizations, we have some of the most active groups around that offer a range of services. We’re truly committed to taking care of each other. If you’d like to make a difference in the community, check out volunteer opportunities at 2-1-1 Wisconsin, local churches or your workplace.

Many of our local employers strive to create a workplace culture that’s socially responsible and devoted to giving back. Aspirus holds the annual Festival of Trees to support hospice services, REI Engineering donates books to schools to teach students about Earth Day and Ghidorzi organizes the annual Clean & Green community-wide spring clean-up to free our beautiful landscape of litter and debris. It seems every employer today is doing their part to promote the greater good and bring people together.

Join a Club

Another way to get connected with like-minded people who share your passions is to join a club or civic organization. Outdoor enthusiasts looking for adventure can join Wausau Wheelers Bike Club, Rib Mountain Ski Club or a pickle ball league. If you can’t find a group that suites your interest, form one yourself. There could be someone else just waiting to get on board with your great idea.

Adopt a Pet

Adopting a furbaby could be your ticket to meeting other pet lovers in the neighborhood. Dogs are great conversation starters when visiting one of the dog parks in the Greater Wausau Region including Kronenwetter, Merrill, Rib Mountain and Weston. The Humane Society of Marathon County is a great place to go if you’d like to adopt a pet or volunteer a few hours a week. They even hold events like cat yoga and a golf scramble fundraiser.
