Washington Street Downtown Gains On-street Parking Spots

October 15, 2021

More on-street parking is coming to the Washington Street area this month. Construction crews are currently grading and prepping the base between First and Fourth Streets for installing asphalt next week. Once the street is paint striped, it should be ready for parking by Friday, October 22.

According to Eric Lindman, director of public works and utilities for the city, the street will remain open to traffic during the expansion project.

“It’s advantageous to businesses as their customers will have access to more convenient parking,” said Eric Lindman.”

Washington St downtown Wausau“Businesses requested additional parking to help offset some of the disruptions related to the ongoing redevelopment downtown. The city felt it was a good interim use of the space until construction on the new development begins.”

The 40 additional on-street parking spots will be a welcome change for neighboring businesses. Chrissy Kaupie, owner of Mulligal, a woman’s new and consignment golf apparel boutique, supports growth and improvements to downtown. “More convenient parking will be fabulous for the businesses and their shoppers as well as folks who come down to see the rendering banners on the fence along Washington Street,” said Kaupie.

The renderings display the proposed redesign of the Wausau Center mall area. Washington Street will be converted to two-way traffic in the future.
