Local contractors are playing a vital role in developing the Foundry on 3rd. This modern apartment building is a cornerstone of a comprehensive, multi-phase plan designed to breathe new life into the area, positioning Wausau as a vibrant nexus for commerce and culture.
"Our local businesses are at the heart of this revitalization effort," remarked Dave Eckmann, president of Wausau Opportunity Zone (WOZ). "They not only bring their expertise to the project but also a deep understanding of our community, ensuring that the development truly reflects who we are as a city."
The Foundry on 3rd will feature 153 modern apartments and up to 10 retail shops, designed to attract new residents and invigorate the downtown atmosphere.
Before construction began, REI Engineering, a leading environmental consulting firm based in Wausau, conducted essential environmental assessments. They worked closely with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to identify and manage the removal of contaminants, following strict environmental protocols. The firm's meticulous approach facilitated a smoother construction process and helped build trust within the community regarding the project's integrity.
"It's been exciting to have my team involved," stated Ken Lassa, vice president of REI Engineering. "Opportunities like this don’t come around often."
Lassa believes the development will enhance the city and draw attention to Wausau's unique attractions, such as the kayak course and Granite Peak. "I remember when the east riverside was cluttered with rundown buildings and the mall was in disrepair. Those days are behind us. It’s an exciting time for our city," he added.
REI Engineering will continue to provide services and support the Foundry on 3rd as it evolves, demonstrating a commitment to community development and environmental stewardship in urban revitalization.
Many contractors involved have deep-rooted connections to Wausau, viewing the Foundry as a catalyst for a brighter future. Their collaborations with stakeholders and local businesses are strengthening community ties and bolstering the local economy.
PGA Excavation of Weston is working alongside ownership and construction teams to manage site preparation, utility installation and foundational work. "We're proud to contribute to our community's progress," said Kurt Seubert, PGA Excavation’s construction manager.
He views the project as a promising glimpse into the future of the downtown, with dedicated investors willing to undertake the construction of such developments. The vision for a vibrant urban center relies on these initiatives, transforming the area into a thriving destination. PGA Excavation acknowledges the vital roles played by various organizations, including the City of Wausau, Wausau Opportunity Zone, T. Wall Enterprises, and Stevens Construction in bringing this vision to life.
Community engagement has surged in the past year as residents witness important changes. "When I show our city to out-of-town visitors, they're always impressed by its charm and appeal," Lassa said.
With each step forward, Wausau is reclaiming its identity as the community unites around a shared purpose and vision.
