Demolition on the Wausau Center Mall is Right on Track as the Old Sears Building Disappears

May 27, 2021

Crews started razing the old Sears building at the Wausau Center Mall on Friday, May 21 and will be moving into the mall’s main body by early next week. Wausau Opportunity Zone, Inc has hired contractors Veit & Company to do the demolition.

As of Thursday, the ceiling of the anchor store near Washington Street and 5th Street was gone and the interior was stripped down to the concrete, leaving the East parking ramp exposed. Work to dismantle the Wausau Center Mall is progressing rapidly, according to the construction team. They anticipate the old Sears building to be fully removed by June 1st when they start dismantling the central corridors of the mall. See demolition photos below and watch videos here.

Redevelopment of the over 400,000-square-foot Wausau Center Mall area -- to include a mixed-use space of housing, public space and businesses -- is planned for late fall.
